As part of the program, the city will undertake several initiatives intended to make it more pet-friendly. Among them are a joint campaign with the Humane Rescue Alliance focused on responsible pet ownership and an initiative to make several prominent events more pet-friendly. As part of these initiatives, pet “comfort stations” will be installed at event sites to provide fresh water, shade, treats, and waste bags.
While these latest initiatives will help make Washington, D.C. more enjoyable for pets and their owners, the city has already developed a strong reputation for being pet-friendly. A 2017 survey conducted for the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) found that pets were welcome in over 80% of congressional offices — a figure that was consistent across party lines. In comparison, only 7% of workplaces in the United States reported allowing pets.
