According to a new survey from the American Pet Products Association (APPA), saltwater fish are growing in popularity among fishkeepers.
The total number of households with saltwater fish is 2.5 million — almost twice that of the 1.3 million households with saltwater fish in 2014. These most recent findings are particularly remarkable as they represent the first time the saltwater fish category has grown since APPA began tracking the statistic.
Part of the reason for the growth? Increased availability of new species combined with the increased availability of captive-bred species which tend to be hardier and better suited for aquariums than their wild-caught counterparts. The increased availability of comprehensive saltwater aquarium kits may have also played a role in getting more fishkeepers interested in saltwater fish.
“I certainly think the greater availability of quality marine aquarium products helps to grow the category as a whole. Together with the ever increasing knowledge, that keeps driving the hobby forward.”
