As part of PetSmart‘s 30th anniversary celebrations, the pet retail chain recently announced the launch of a new buy-one-give-one pet food program.
Under PetSmart’s “Buy a Bag, Give a Meal” program, for every bag of dog or cat food purchased in-store or online through petsmart.com between March 1 and December 31, 2017, PetSmart will donate a meal to a pet in need. The meals donated by PetSmart will be served through a combination of shelters, animal welfare organizations, and food banks.
While the number of dogs in shelters appears to be on the decline, there are still approximately 7 million pets that enter shelters each year. While those pets wait to be adopted, they continue to need care and supplies, something that can be a considerable expense for the shelters that house them. Data from a PetSmart Charities survey indicates that only 20% of shelters in North America receive pet food donations. PetSmart anticipates that the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal program will supply shelter pets and other pets in need with over 60 million meals.
“At PetSmart, we love pets, and we believe they make us better people. To celebrate our 30 years of continued commitment to helping pets in need every day and as a trusted partner to pet parents everywhere, we want to celebrate by giving back even more. Throughout 2017, every time pet parents purchase any bag of dog or cat food in our stores or online, they can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too. It’s that simple.”
