Pets of the Homeless, a not-for-profit that assists homeless people in caring for their pets, needs your help in getting 12 tons of pet food to animals in need.
The organization, whose mission is to feed and to provide basic veterinary care to the pets of homeless people in the United States and Canada, needs an additional 24,000 pounds of food to meet its goals for 2016. In addition to donations for food, Pets of the Homeless also needs donations to help provide veterinary care for pets in need. The organization has provided over $78,000 in veterinary relief this year alone and has helped over 14,000 pets in the ten years since its inception.
There are an estimated 175,000 – 350,000 pets in the care of homeless individuals in the United States alone.
“Eighty-seven cents out of every dollar donated goes directly to our free programs. For homeless people with pets, many are forced to choose between their pet or a roof over their head. These pets are non-judgmental and provide love, comfort and an emotional bond of loyalty. In some cases, they provide the homeless with protection and also keep them warm. During the holidays, giving human food to local food banks is great, but remember that Fido and Kitty need assistance, too.”
