The contest, open to teachers of pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, asks teachers to submit a lesson plan built around the use of fish, reptiles, and small animals. Submissions will be categorized by animal type (reptile/amphibian, aquarium/fish, birds/small animals) and grade level (pre-kindergarten–2, 3–5, 6–8). One winner will be selected from each animal/grade level combination for a total of nine winners in total. Winners will receive a $100 gift card.
Submissions from all categories will be scored on the following criteria:
- Progressive: Having the ability to communicate multiple topics or one topic across different depths of knowledge
- Interactive: Having the students or parents actively seek out and record their knowledge
- Thorough: Lesson plan is complete with stated objectives and evaluation of results
- Challenging: The students are pushed to expand their knowledge and pets are an integral part of the classroom curriculum
Lesson plans submitted as videos, worksheets, photos, PowerPoint presentations, flyers, or written documents will be eligible for review. Additional information on the application process can be found here.
Submissions are being accepted through August 1.
