Quality Marine has announced that they have successfully bred Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasses in captivity. The announcement comes after a string of other aquaculture successes throughout the past year.
Aquaculture, the process of raising fish in controlled environments, has been hailed as a major step toward sustainability among aquarists and fishkeeping enthusiasts. In addition to producing fish that are better-suited to aquarium life, aquaculture reduces the burden on fish in the wild and their natural habitats.
The Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse has been viewed as a particularly challenging fish to raise in controlled environments due to feeding difficulties. The aquacultured Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse produced by Quality Marine are raised on a more conventional diet and aren’t prone to the same feeding challenges as their wild counterparts. As a result, the aquacultured versions are likely to be better-suited for a wider range of fishkeepers.
