A Note From President, Bob Vetere
As 2018 comes to an end I’d like to take a look back at all that we’ve accomplished this year and look ahead to an impactful 2019. This past September, The Pet Leadership Council co-hosted another successful Pet Night on Capitol Hill along with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). More than a dozen members of Congress along with congressional staffers and the pet care community packed the room to celebrate the importance of responsible pet ownership in America and to learn about the scientific evidence that shows how pet ownership and pet-friendly policies lead to improved health and well-being for both people and animals. We also launched the PLC Giving Network in partnership with GreaterGood.org and Rescue Bank! This important portal helps maximize assistance from our generous pet care community such as yourselves to animal shelters, sanctuaries and rescue groups across the country. We worked together to provide much-needed assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence and the California wildfires and continue to address the ongoing needs of animal shelters as the portal was designed to not only support crisis situations but also year-round shelter needs. We also conducted research to identify issues important to pet owners and now have two solid initiatives in place to protect the availability of pets:
1. through responsible sheltering and breeding and 2. by improving access to pet-friendly housing and pet-friendly workplaces.
I hope to see many of you at the upcoming 2019 Pet Industry Leadership Conference, Jan. 27-30 at the La Cantera Resort & Spa in San Antonio. The theme of this year’s event is Embracing Change and Honoring Tradition, an especially relevant adage for the pet industry of today. The conference is exclusively for members of APPA, PIDA, PIJAC and WPA. For more information and to register, visit www.pida.org/pilc.
Reminder: The Pet Leadership Council will be meeting during the PILC on Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the San Augustine B Meeting Room. The meeting will take place from 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm CST.
And finally, I’d like to personally thank you all for your continued support and am more optimistic now than ever about the Pet Leadership Council and what we can accomplish in the New Year!
